And What do You do?

By Becky Hunter

“And what do you do?”

It is such a simple question. Yet it is one that can cause an incredible, godly wife, who’s a stay-at-home mom, a frustration that is hard to put into words. It is a question that can make a pastor’s wife who has chosen to pour her efforts and gifts into her partnership with her husband, in whatever ways are helpful, to stumble for a response. It’s a question that drives many women from a sacred place of very real ministry and service.

There are valid reasons to work outside the home: financial needs or professional God-given callings among them, but we cannot afford to make a decision to invest our time and effort away from our husband, his ministry service, and our children based on our need to have an “acceptable” answer to “And what do you do?”

It isn’t just a possibility, or probability, that God has made you one with a man who has been tapped by Him for such an important Kingdom building role. It is a fact that your passion for your husband, and the gifts and efforts you bring to that partnership bless God’s church and the community in ways that only you can. When you invest your best self in such a joint account you compound interest in every sense of that term.

The real question you need to answer is not the one the world is asking: “And what do you do?” It is one you ask yourself: “And what am I doing?”

A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds. Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it. Never spiteful, she treats him generously all her life long. — Proverbs 31: 10-12 (The Message)

Global Pastors Wives Network’s purpose is “supporting wives, supporting pastors.” We exist for you.

Remember to pray for pastors’ wives when you sit down in your worship service this weekend. I’m praying for you!
