Eat and Rest
By Becky Hunter, July 20, 2007
So, how’s life going for you this summer? Let me guess...Busy? Hectic? Frenetic?
Remember the story of Elijah in I Kings 19? Right after he had dealt with the prophets of Baal in feats of God ordained miracles and super human strength, Jezebel told him she was going to “get him for this” and he took off running. He ran so far he eventually left his servant behind, ran for another full day, and collapsed. Exhausted he said:
Enough of this, GOD! Take my life! And he fell asleep under the broom bush. Suddenly an angel shook him awake and said, "Get up and eat!” He looked around and, to his surprise, right by his head were a loaf of bread baked on some coals and a jug of water. He ate the meal and went back to sleep. The angel of GOD came back, shook him awake again, and said, “Get up and eat some more–you’ve got a long journey ahead of you.”(I Kings 19: 4-7)
Hmm. Interesting. Elijah didn’t need death. He just needed a nap and some baked goods.
How about you? Over the past few years has God let you be part of some pretty amazing events? Have you been dogged by someone who hasn’t liked the way you carried on your part in ministry? Did you leave behind someone who would love to assist you in your journey? Have you looked toward Heaven recently and said, “Lord, just take me now!”
If so, could I be so bold as to recommend that you just take a nap and eat something yummy?
Another weekend filled with opportunities for ministry to our families, churches, and communities, is almost here. And what we do with those opportunities matters. If you wish you could get excited about that, but even after your nap and snack you are simply “over it,” then do what Elijah did. Eat and rest again.
Soon you will be ready for “God-ordained” feats that require almost “super human strength,” and when you are, retrieve those who can assist you in your mission and get back to your calling.
I’m praying for you Sunday morning and so are hundreds of other pastors’ wives around the world. You are loved. |
