Preaching and Teaching Along Side Your Husband

By: Lisa Clay

Q: How does a pastor’s wife handle the pressure of being called to preach and teach along side her husband?QandA

A: I have fulfilled this calling for 22 years now, and it has joys and challenges. Make sure you are united with your husband about your exact role and duties, and make certain he communicates that well to his deacons, leaders, and the Body you serve. Read John Bevere's book "Under Cover" and practice what it teaches concerning authority. It is an awesome tool. Don't allow members of the body to separate you and your husband by tolerating comments like "I enjoy your teaching much more than his...." Always correct comments like this graciously and tactfully, but firmly: "My husband is an awesome preacher. It is a privilege for me to teach the gospel alongside him. We aren't two separate entities, we stand together in the calling of preaching and teaching."

Be your husband's greatest cheerleader when he preaches and teaches. Don't try to tell him how to 'do it' because you do it a different way. Relax and let him exercise the unique gift God has given him. NEVER, EVER, EVER compete for people's attention or praise. That would be the devil's way of dividing you and defeating you.

Enjoy your gift and use it to the full. Deflect criticism about being a woman. Don't allow people who do not understand the Word to manipulate you into backing down from your calling. Don't answer foolish accusations; keep silent and keep your peace. Allow God to be your defender
